In May 2022, I sat down with the important charity Campaign against Antisemitism, and we spoke about my new collection of paintings entitled To Be a Jew and how I have addressed the topic of antisemitism through my art. In this episode, I discuss the experiences of antisemitism that have inspired my work and I talk about my grandfather, Sender Riseman, a Holocaust-survivor and painter who inspired me to pick up paintbrushes.
Alexander Riseman was one of The Boys, a group of boys made famous by the historian Martin Gilbert. After the war, the UK offered to take in Holocaust survivor teenagers but they could only find 732 children. The Boys is an exhaustive account of the collected memories of this group of children who survived the Nazi Concentration Camps and then rebuilt their life in the UK.
