my paintings are filled with philosophy, psychology and mindset, wrapped up into a beautiful piece of art.
BUT IF YOU WANT TO WATCH MY JOURNEY THEN COME JOIN ME BEHIND THE SCENES.
in the studio
A topic triggers my attention and I jump straight in. I explore, unpack and ultimately try to elevate the subject matter onto Canvas. My research finds its way into my Podcast
I know what I want the Painting to say but I have no idea how it should look! Here comes the scary part. I close my eyes, take a deep breath, and start drawing.
1. VIsion plan
2. colour Theory
4. first layers
I mock up a preliminary design in Photoshop and choose the mood, palette and symbolism I intend to include in the painting.
The painting starts to take shape and as always, my hands take on a life of their own and the paints and colours flow.
I look to materials that can express my message more succintly, whether it be paint, ashes, rocks, mud, family heirlooms or even old rings!
3. initial sketches
At this point I am very proud of the painting and I intend to work another day or two on the piece before it is complete.
A day/week/month/year later I approach the canvas again. This is the hardest part. I try and fail and then succeed and finally the painting is complete.
5. five layers in
6. disaster strikes
8. shipped & hung
When I'm finally getting into flow, the painting suddenly transforms from magnificent to dreadful. Just as with life, the darkest time is just before dawn. I usually give up now and attempt to throw the canvas in the bin.
